February Asthma Helpline Case Study Teenager with Asthma Smoking

Liz called the Asthma Helpline for advice on what to do about her 15 year old son , Gareth, who has asthma and recently began smoking.

My 15 year old son, Gareth has asthma, although it is well controlled. He has a good asthma management plan, which our GP devised with us. Recently I found packets of cigarettes in Gareth’s schoolbag and I have noticed other signs he may have started smoking. I am not sure how to approach the subject with him. However, I am very worried  and I want to act before he becomes addicted and his asthma becomes affected. What advice can you give me?

Asthma Helpline Advice: As you know, teenage/parent communication can be hard to navigate. At the moment, if  you only suspect that your son is smoking, then I suggest you do not confront your son as he may become defensive and you may damage your relationship with him.

However, If you have seen enough evidence, then tell him you know he is smoking and let him know of your concerns especially because of how smoking could affect his asthma. I would advise you to restrict your conversation to your concerns for his general health. For teenagers it might be effective to focus on the effects smoking has on teeth and skin and the unpleasant odour. Avoid making judgments or forecasts about him.

Let him know about programmes and methods that are available to help smokers stop.

He will have to make the decision himself to stop smoking and nagging him will not be helpful. Smoking is addictive which is why it is difficult to stop, so being supportive and encouraging is the best way you can help your son. Try to keep the relationship between you friendly and open, even if he does not agree with you.
