The Asthma Society of Ireland Announces Appointment of New CEO

Sharon Cosgrove took up the position when Dr Jean Holohan stepped down last month.

Wednesday 1st August: The Asthma Society of Ireland is delighted to announce the appointment of Sharon Cosgrove as Chief Executive Officer when Dr. Jean Holohan stepped down in July of this year. Ms. Cosgrove has over fifteen years experience in the not for profit sector and was formerly CEO of Sonas Housing Ltd. She took up the position of Asthma Society of Ireland Chief Executive Officer on 17th of July 2012.

Asthma Society of Ireland Chairperson, Angela Edghill who headed the recruitment process said ‘The Board of Directors is delighted to announce that Sharon Cosgrove will become the new Asthma Society of Ireland CEO, following a rigorous recruitment process with a wide range of high calibre applicants. The Asthma Society of Ireland has grown in size and scope during Dr. Holohan’s time as CEO and this is reflected in the array of important, quality services to we provide to patients, as well as our continuing engagement with healthcare and allied health professionals and our pivotal role in the National Asthma Programme. We look forward to continuing this upward momentum with Ms. Cosgrove leading the Society forward and implementing our new strategic plan, during this challenging but exciting time.’

Ms. Cosgrove said ‘I am very happy to be joining the Asthma Society of Ireland team and to be heading up such a dynamic and high achieving organisation, which is dedicated to better patient outcomes. The scale of the disease in Ireland is enormous, with asthma touching the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients and their families, and likewise the challenges facing the Asthma Society of Ireland in improving asthma control are substantial. I look forward to leading the Asthma Society and its small but dedicated team in over coming these challenges and working towards optimal asthma control for all asthma patients in Ireland.’

Outgoing CEO, Dr. Jean Holohan, leaves the Asthma Society of Ireland after six years to move abroad with her family. During Dr. Holohan’s time as CEO the Asthma Society of Ireland has changed immensely, increasing both in organisational size and in impact. A prime example of the successes that the Society has experienced during Dr Holohan’s time as CEO was the development of an Asthma Society of Ireland primary care project that paved the way for the development of the HSE National Asthma Programme. Dr. Holohan will continue to represent the Asthma Society of Ireland on the implementation committee of the National Asthma Programme on an interim basis.
